Motivating

From atop my exalted position I announce, 'You have to motivate people how they NEED to be motivated.' 1. my position is not exalted and b. I don't claim any epiphanies, nothing that doesn't include bacon, a trapeze and a monkey. iii. I like to use odd numbering sequences - should you have the opportunity to say, "Number 1....." then pull "B" and God bless you if you can find the chutzpah to use 'little i, little i little i', the faces on the folks around are priceless!! But I digress...

I had a book about motivating people and I made everyone at work take the included test, then I charted them and attempted to figure out what motivated them. Turns out (and thank God I didn't pay for the book) I knew what motivated everyone. It's a group of 30 and it's clearly a matter of knowing what is important to each individual and getting to know them- how silly! Some I know better than others, but by God, what a talented misfit group of good souls I am blessed with. Today I joked about bribing them with Chinese food - while we all enjoyed the food, they know me better, they know I do this to reward them for all they deal with, high maintenance customers, the stress of their jobs, each other, me, home life. We all giggled while ordering lunch, waited in anticipation for it to show up and then silence ensued while it was eaten in record speed, with the exception of Jenna, she eats slowly and then emails us to let us know her food is still there while we are on the 'god I'm hungry again' wave.

Listening has been my greatest friend, sometimes there are things I can take care of, sometimes the listening is all I can do, but it's okay for my group. They know me, they know how far we can go. They also know that the sky is the limit in my eyes and they love that. I love them all and they are my extended family, I defend at my peril. I am lucky.
